I keep hearing this phrase more and more. Just this week @Pardot's #B2BInspiration Tour, it was a huge discussion. And today, I saw this article posted on Fast Company...so I thought I would share.

Marketing 101...or not
I thought to kick it off, we could start with some statistics that I've picked up over the past year or so, demonstrating exciting changes happening in marketing.
"In 1960, there were 5 main marketing channels. In 2013, 60+ marketing channels. In 2020, predicted 100+ marketing channels." - per @msweezey, @Pardot #B2BInspiration Tour
"CEOs believe social will become one of the top two ways to engage customers, mainly at the expense of traditional approaches." - IBM CEO Study 2012
"Over 90% of research starts online. And with Google." - multiple sources
"99% of surveyed respondents agree that as their research deepens, their search terms change. And 76% go back to google 2-3 times." - per @msweezey, @Pardot #B2BInspiration Tour
"Less than 2% of active keywords deliver 100% of conversions." - IRCE 2012
"71% of respondents prefer content less than 5 pages long!" - per @msweezey, @Pardot #B2BInspiration Tour
"35% of respondents have 3 or more smart devices" - IRCE 2012
"In 2009, 50% of publishers had not yet turned to ebooks. In 2011, there were only 5%." - IRCE 2012
"In the SMB space, there are over 150M conversations daily in social spheres about these brands." - Cloudforce Atlanta 2012
"The average adult attention span is 8 seconds!" - @sherylpattek, Forrester Research, @Pardot #B2BInspiration Tour
Okay....I could keep going, but I think you get the picture. Gone are the days of mailing a pretty picture with lots of text, and expecting the customer to come to you. Actually, was that ever ok?
It's time to wake up and realize that consumers and businesses alike have taken control over the buying cycle. It might be time to rethink that Marketing 101. Because the rules have changed and they won't ever be the same, not today, or tomorrow.

These are merely a highlight of information I have gathered
from various conferences and education seminars.
